20-NOV-01 Miss Bell's Fountain
II
Drinking fountain and combined street lamp. Erected 1879; made to the designs of Sir Charles Barry for the Metropolitan Drinking and Cattle Trough Association and donated by Miss Eliza Bell of Borovere. Polished Cornish grey granite and bronze. Octagonal stepped base with circular pedestal and bowl on top, from the centre of which rises the fountain column, on top of which there is an ornate squat bronze standard, originally surmounted by a globe-shaped lamp with a finial.
NOTE: Miss Eliza Bell wanted to have a street light at the end of her drive on the Winchester road on the edge of Alton. This gas street lamp and combined fountain was erected at her expense. A similar fountain, also donated by Miss Bell, was placed in the civic square, Crown Close, before being replaced by the War memorial and re-erected in the Public Gardens in Alton.
