House. Circa late C15/early C16; extended circa early C17 and C18; altered and extended C20. Timber-framed with painted brick infilling; altered and extended in brick [painted]. Clay plain tile roof with gabled ends and catslides over outshuts. Brick lateral stack on side of cross-wing.
PLAN: One surviving bay of a late Medieval open hall, truncated at right [SW] end, and with a circa early C17 cross-wing built on the left [NE] end; in C18 the gabled front of the cross-wing was faced in brick and a small outshut was built on the left [NE] side. Outshuts were built at the rear [SE] in C20.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2-bay north west front; timber-framed 1-bay range on right with tension-brace, brick infilling and 2-light casement windows; projecting cross-wing on left with painted brick gable and with outshut on left with plank door, 3-light casements with glazing bars and cambered brick arches on ground and first floors and doorway on right with glazed and panelled door and an C18 moulded canopy on shaped brackets. At rear [SE] rendered timber-frame gable of cross-wing on right and roof carried down over C20 outshuts, the right-hand outshut continued around side of cross-wing on right.
INTERIOR: Front room of cross-wing has chamfered axial beam with hollow-step or cyma stops and C20 brick chimneypiece; partition to passage made from reused C17 panelling with C17 panelled door and another C17 door opposite. Room behind has unchamfered joists. Ground floor room in original main range has chamfered axial beam without stops and unchamfered joists. Chambers in cross-wing have chamfered axial beams with hollow-step or cyma stops and exposed joists. Jowled storey-posts and exposed wall-framing in cross-wing. C18 chimneypiece to fireplace in front chamber of cross-wing. Plank doors. Roof over main south west range, one surviving bay with smoke-blackened common-rafter couples, purlins and wind-braces and with smoke-blackened plaster infilling to SW gable. Roof of cross-wing inaccessible.
The Forge is a small timber-framed house with a surviving bay of a late Medieval hall and an early C17 cross-wing.
