LONG LOAD
Cattle Shelter to South-west of Hamlyn's Farm

II

Cattle shelter. Circa late C19 or early C20. Coursed stone rubble rear wall and timber posts to open front. Corrugated-iron clad roof with similarly clad gable ends, concealing 'solid thatch' roof structure. Small 4-bay open-fronted shed facing north, with unhewn timber posts supporting roof. Closely-spaced unhewn pole joists supporting 'solid thatch' roof structure, made from coarse brushwood, brambles and straw, and thatched on top, now clad in corrugated-iron sheets. The remaining four bays of a longer shed that extended to the east.
This is a very rare example of a 'solid thatch' roof structure, a primitive form of construction that avoided the need for trusses. There are other local examples at Church Farm, West Camel and at Hainbury Farm, Northover, Yeovilton.
