School caretaker's house. 1898 by William Larkins Bernard FRIBA (1843-1922) for the Bristol Board Scool. Squared Pennant Sandstone rubble, red brick and terra cotta dressings, double Roman tiled roof. Two storeys. Two window front to Fairfield Road with canted bay to ground floor of left side; plate glass sash windows set within brick surrounds with quoins; first floor windows rise through eaves and terminate in pediments. Side elevations of front range terminate in segmental pedimented gable ends: blind to east (playgroud) side, single sash window to each floor of west (Fairlawn Road) side. Entrance in west-facing side wall of range to rear; modern replacement front door; range has a further segment-headed gable to north end.
HISTORY: built to serve the Fairfield Road School, this house forms part of a distinguished group of Bristol School Board buildings. Its designer, Bernard, was chief architect to the BSB from 1888.
