Nos.5 AND 5A) GV II Formerly known as: No.5 COLLEGE YARD.
House, now offices with attached railings to front and
courtyard walls to rear. c1800. Reddish-orange brick in
Flemish bond with plain tile roof, tall ridge and end brick
stacks with oversailing courses and pots, stone sills and
doorcase, timber eaves, cast-iron railings, basement covers
and lamp. L-plan occupying a corner site, with further wing at
rear. 3 storeys on basement and with attics, 3 + 3 first-floor
windows. Ground and first floors have 6/6 sashes except 2 to
ground floor at right are 2/2 sashes; second floor has 3/3
sashes, all in plain reveals and with sills and flat arches of
gauged brick. 2 + 1 box roof dormers have 3/3 sashes.
Basement: to left a 6/6 sash, then entrance a part-glazed
door. At right a half-basement, now blocked. Basements have
cast-iron covers with scroll design, renewed at right. Central
entrance: quadrant porch to angle, 3 renewed steps curved on
plan to 6-panel door, the upper panels raised and fielded,
lower panels flush beaded, fanlight with petal glazing bars;
tooled round arch on fleurons within pilastered surround with
acanthus corbel brackets with oval motif above and fluted
frieze, continuous cornice to porch. Crowning frieze,
cyma-moulded cornice. Rear has canted bay to full height with
tripartite window on ground and second floors with 6/6 between
/4 sashes, Venetian window to first floor with 6/6
round-arched sash with gothic glazing bars between 2/4 sashes,
otherwise 6/6 and 3/6 sashes and Diocletian window at right.
INTERIOR: retains original plasterwork including moulded
cornices, some to ground floor with fleurons, and joinery
including panelled shutters; openwell staircase has stick
balusters and wreathed handrail.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: railings to sides of steps with curved
handrail, renewed railings at left; cast-iron boot scraper.
Ramped courtyard walls at rear approximately 6 x 12 x 6 metres
by 3 metres high. Archway with imposts and
6-flush-panel door in centre of rear wall.
All the listed buildings in College Yard (qqv) form a group
with and part of the setting for the Cathedral (qv). (NMR: Photograph).
