Coach house and stables, now dwellings. Probably c1719-23 with
earlier origins including possibly C13 wall to rear and later
additions and alterations including those c1850 and
conversions c1980s. Possibly by William and Francis Smith of
Tettenhall, Staffordshire for Bishop Hough. Pinkish-red brick
in Flemish bond with ashlar plinth, quoins, bands and cornice;
hipped plain tile roof; cast-iron brackets. 2 storeys with
attic to pediment, 3:1:3 first-floor windows. Centre bay
breaks forward and is pedimented. Quoins to ends and to
breakforward. Chamfered plinth, first-floor band, crowning
cavetto-moulded cornice. Ground floor: outer bays have tall
casement windows in original stable openings, with cambered
arches over. To centre a plank and glass infill under wide,
cambered arch with keystone. Pediment has oculus with
cavetto-moulded surround and 4 voussoirs. Returns have 2
windows. 4 carriage lamps on scrolled brackets.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Probably built at the time of alterations and rebuilding to
the Old Palace (qv) for Bishop Hough. Forms part of the
setting for The Old Palace (qv).
