Piers to The Old Palace
GV II
Walls, gates and gate piers. c1719-23. Possibly by William and
Francis Smith of Tettenhall, Staffordshire for Bishop John
Hough. Pinkish-red brick in English Garden Wall bond with
green and red sandstone plinth, ashlar copings and finials,
cast-iron vehicular gates and timber pedestrian gate. Wall
follows the line of the street extending for approximately 40
metres, in 2 sections of approximately 35 metres from north
west to gate, then 5 metres to east. Chamfered plinth. Wall
approximately 3 metres high surmounted by double-chamfered
copings. Piers at intervals of approximately 5 metres are
taller and have cornices. Gatepiers surmounted by cornices and
gadrooned vase finials. Double gates have bars joined to form
Gothick arches to heads, and dogbars, with 2 levels of rails
between. At north west end a further pedestrian entrance:
plank door in round-arched opening and with double-chamfered
coping over, between 2 piers. The building of the wall was
probably part of the scheme for alterations and rebuilding at
The Old Palace (qv) for Bishop Hough, c1719-23. A significant
streetscape feature forming part of the setting for The Old
Palace (qv).
