Two houses and shops, now shop and flat. Probably c1500-1550
with later additions and alterations including shop window at
right Late C19, and extension to rear c1980. Timber frame with
plaster infill, brick to side and rear walls, renewed plain
tile roof.
PLAN: three bays with two ranges parallel to the street,
further outshut to the rear and later extension. 2 storeys, 3
bays. First floor is jettied and has decorative box frames.
First floor has three casement windows: a multi-pane, 4-light
window and two 2-light windows with mullions; renewed moulded
sills. Ground floor has plinth to left; three large multi-pane
shop windows, that to right has 6 panes, that to centre is on
panelled plinth. Entrances: that to left a plank door with
blind overlight giving access to through passage; off-centre
right shop entrance a part-glazed door with overlight.
Tie-beam to right gable end. To left passage: former entrance
to shop a part-glazed door with margin-lights.
INTERIOR: the three main posts are visible internally to the
front wall, and 2 chamfered transverse beams, all with
mortices for particular walls (removed). Five chamfered beams
to left. First floor said to have some exposed timber-framing.
HISTORICAL NOTE: originally there were two 2-bay buildings,
however the north bay has been demolished. In 1555 both houses
belonged to Henry Hosier. The north house was rented to
Richard Hornby, pewterer, and had a hall, parlour, two
chambers, shop and kitchen. The property was bought by the
Society of Friends in 1671 and a meeting house was erected on
the site.
