The Cedars
GV II
House. c1855. Rendered brickwork, probably a stone basement,
Welsh slate roof; cast-iron balcony on cast-iron brackets.
Italianate villa style. Two storeys and basement with 3-storey
tower over entrance. Entrance (west) front has 3-storey tower
projecting to left. Three-bay loggia to ground floor, band
over, 3/6 sash to first floor with tooled architrave, cornice
above to general eaves line. 2-light, round-arched window in
tower gable. Each floor is framed by pilaster strips. Blank
wall to right with projecting stack and string. Tall chimney
with paired shaft. South front has 2-storey canted ay to left
with sash windows, set within the gable. To right are two
windows, 6-light large pane sashes below, 9-light above, all
in architraves. Projecting eaves on brackets. East front has
basement revealed by falling ground. 3-storey canted bay to
left as before. Ground floor has balcony. One window to right;
6/6 sash to ground floor, 3/6 to first floor.
INTERIOR: noted as retaining complete joinery and planning of
Victorian villa. Stone openwell stair with two trussed
balusters to each head and mahogany rail with curtail.
Three-light arched stair window. All doors, shutters, cornices
and fire surrounds extant, some grates. First floor rooms
plain. Back stair from basement to first floor. Basement
retains full cellar, laundry with copper and boiler. Kitchen
yard retains sheds and offices. A remarkably complete
Victorian villa altered only by C20 plumbing in the upper
rooms.
