Large detached house, now flats. 1840-68 with later additions and
alterations. Painted stucco over brick, hipped slate roof with
wide eaves on timber brackets. Stucco end stacks with brick
oversailing detail and pots. Double-depth plan with principal
entrance in right-return with hall leading to central staircase.
3 storeys with cellar. 4 first-floor windows. Stucco is lined to
represent ashlar and detailing includes plain plinth; moulded
first-floor sill band which breaks forward at each window with
corbel brackets under, similar brackets to sills of second-floor
windows which have plain architraves; moulded eared architraves
to first-floor windows; ground-floor windows have double
architrave, plain with narrower moulded detail superimposed,
moulded cornice over each window with fluted and moulded console
brackets. To ground-floor are unequal 6/6 sashes extending to
floor level and each accessed from stone-flagged terrace by a
roll-edged stone step incorporating cast-iron ventilation grille
to cellar; otherwise windows are 6/6; all in plain reveals.
Left-return has narrow, full-width single-storey extension.
Right-return: sill band continues from facade. At centre and
right are two 6/6 sashes to first and second-floor. Central
entrance with Tuscan-style porch, C20 glazed door. Further 6/6
sash to right. Rear elevation is painted brick with 2-storey
outshut to left; moulded stone string course between ground- and
first-floor windows which are mainly 6/6 sashes under segmental
arches with plain reveals and stone sills. Rear door is 4-panel,
raised and fielded with bolection moulding; flanked by 2-pane
side-lights; scalloped arris to stone lintel.
INTERIOR: retains original features including panelled doors and
shutters, architraves, skirtings, cornices and centres, black
marble fireplace; dogleg staircase has slender turned balusters
and wreathed handrail. Extensive brick paved cellars retain slate
slabs and large stone sink, cask drop to rear (east). 2-storey
service range in painted brick and slate to rear north includes
6/6 sashes under segmental arched heads. Now forms separate
dwelling as does red brick and slate coach house to south.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Because of their elevated position, vehicular
access to these houses could only be from the east via Lansdowne
Crescent Lane; this introduced a degree of formality to what
would normally be the rear elevations. The 1886 O.S. map shows
this house and No.14 qv) as exceptions with carriage drives from
the west off Lansdowne Crescent. Nos. 1-15 (consecutive) and 17
and 18 Lansdowne Crescent (qqv) form a good group of listed
buildings comparing well with other developments of this period
in Worcester such as Britannia Square, Lark Hill, and Rainbow
Hill Terrace (qqv).
