Walls, piers, gates and
gate lodge to Pitmaston
House and Pitmaston Park
GV II
Walls, piers, gates and gate lodge. Mid C19. Coursed limestone
with ashlar piers and cast-iron gates; lodge has renewed plain
tile roof and 2 tall diamond stacks with stepped oversailing
course and pots to angle.
PLAN: from left (south), end pier and quadrant wall approximately
4 metres high extends for approximately 12 metres, interrupted by
pedestrian entrance, to T-plan lodge; quadrant walls,
approximately 6 metres long with pair of gate piers, square on
plan, and double gates between, then boundary wall extending for
approximately 100 metres with upwardly projecting cylindrical
'pier' at approximately 25-metre intervals and cylindrical pier
to north end.
Victorian Gothic style.
Lodge: 2 storeys, single-bay gable end to street incorporated
into wall. Gable end has oriel window to ground floor with
casements and single light to first floor with ashlar surround
and sill; decorative barge boards with quatrefoils. Right return
has 3 casement windows in raised ashlar surrounds. Entrance at
rear a renewed, art-glazed door in chamfered architrave and with
single light in gable. Pedestrian entrance has cambered-arched,
ridged plank door in cambered surround. Gatepiers have traceried
cross-gabled caps, otherwise piers have turret roofs. Walls have
steeply-chamfered copings. Double gates have 2 levels of bars
with tow of quatrefoils between and upper 'tracery', surmounted
by spearhead finials.
A significant streetscape feature, forming an integral part of
the setting for Pitmaston House (qv).
