House, now shop. Late C18 and later additions and alterations
including c1836-99 ground-floor shop front and C20 attic
dormer. Pinkish-brown brick in Flemish bond with gauged red
brick arches and plain tile roof.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with attic, 2 first-floor windows. First
floor and second floors have 8/8 flush sashes, all with flat
arches of gauged brick. 3-course second-floor band; renewed
modillion aves band. Attic dormer has casement window. Ground
floor: outer panelled pilasters, glazed shop windows on
panelled plinths canted in to off-centre right door with
part-glazed overlight, panelled fascia and cornice, blind box.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: an earlier house on this site was rebuilt late
C18. Mealcheapen street flourished particularly in the C16 and
early C17, predominantly as a retail outlet; Hughes: 'it was
the proximity to the Cornmarket that gave the street much of
its prosperity and led to the establishment of a number of
large inns.'
The listed buildings in Mealcheapen Street form a group with
the listed buildings in Cornmarket and the Church of St
Swithun, Church Street (qqv).
