House, now 2 houses with attached garden wall. Late C16/early C17
with later additions and alterations including early C18 range to
left and with further additions of c1900-35 (outshuts to left and
right); c1950-70 rebuilding to ground floor of main range. Timber
frame with brick nogging and wattle and daub infill, plastered
externally and brick now painted or pebble-dashed in parts, with
plain tile roof; 3 tall stack and triple stack with oversailing
course and pots to party-wall; pinkish-brown brick wall. L-shaped
block: gable faces street to right part; wing parallel to road at
left has double-pitch roof and outshut under pentice roof to left
return; further outshut to right return.
EXTERIOR: main range of 2 storeys with attic, 2 first-floor
windows with range to left of one-and-a-half storeys, 2
ground-floor windows with half-dormer. Timber framing is exposed
externally to the main range, front and rear and to the rear
range of the left-hand wing. Main range has jowled end posts with
exposed bressumer over ground floor and tie beam and with small
panels of square and rectangular framing to first and attic
floors. Leaded lights throughout, some with stained glass;
windows to left part under elliptical arches. Entrances: that to
left range in outshut: renewed part-glazed door with stained
glass. That to right (main) range in outshut to right, a renewed
door.
INTERIOR: main range, ground floor has main room to left with
chamfered axial beam, to rear are 2 transverse beams. 1 plank
door. Barrel-vaulted cellar. Exposed square panels of timber
framing to upper stages, tie beam and jowled post to centre.
First-floor beams have triangular-chamfered stops. Exposed
massive chamfered purlins, some exposed braces. Left part retains
chamfered beams: room to front has 2 transverse beams; some
first-floor C19 fireplaces. Exposed purlins and collar beam, some
exposed timber frame.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: wall to rear abuts left part and extends
for approximately 10 metres, about 2 metres high.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the range to left may have originally been a
barn. The building was divided c1920.
