House, now offices. Numbered right to left, described left to
right. Mid C18 for CT Withers, with later additions and
alterations including wing to rear at left of Mid C19.
Reddish-orange brick in Flemish bond with plain tile hipped roof,
brick stack to off-centre left and to left return with
oversailing course and pots, renewed stack at right.
PLAN: probably originally L-plan, now U-plan; originally with
central entrance.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attics, 2:3:2 first-floor windows.
Central pedimented breakforward. First floor has 6/6
cambered-headed sashes; ground floor has 6/6, two 10/10 and two
6/6 cambered-headed sashes; all in plain reveals and with sills
and cambered arches of gauged brick. Moulded timber cornice,
renewed. Pediment has lunette with gothic glazing bars. 2 box
dormers with 3/3 cambered-headed sashes. Entrances to centre and
off-centre left, alike: 6-raised-and-fielded-panel doors, the
upper lights glazed, in tooled architraves, pilastered surrounds
with fluted console brackets surmounted by frieze and segmental
pediments.
Right return (originally garden facade): 2:3:2 first-floor
windows. Central breakforward. Mainly 6/6 cambered-headed sashes
where original, in plain reveals and with sills and cambered
arches of gauged brick; bow window to ground floor has two 10/10
sashes, curved on plan. Further entrance a part-glazed door in
surround with Doric pilasters, frieze and cornice. 2 box dormers
as front facade.
Left return: similar 6/6 cambered-beaded sashes and extension
with 6/6 staircase sash with radial glazing bars to head. Attic
with 12/12 sash.
INTERIOR: retains original joinery and plasterwork. To left part
a closed string, open newel staircase with shaped and ramped
handrail and elongated-onion balusters, square newel posts;
panelled dado. Ovolo-moulded cornice to hall. 6-flush-panel
doors. Marble fireplace to front room at right.
HISTORICAL NOTE: originally Sansome House, a seat of the Withers
family, set in large grounds. Shown on George Young's Map of
1779.
Nos 4 and 6 Sansome Walk form a group with Nos 4-8 (consecutive)
and Nos 11, 12, 12A and 13 Pierpoint Street (qqv).
