House, now 2 shops. Probably c1600 with later additions and
alterations including late C18 refronting and late C19 left shop
front with mid-late C20 shop front to right. Timber frame with
reddish-orange brick in Flemish bond to front facade,
pinkish-brown brick to returns, stone architraves and sills;
slate roof to front part and cement tile to rear; end brick
stacks with oversailing courses and pots.
PLAN: double-depth plan with double pitch roof.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, 2 first-floor windows. First floor: 6/6
sashes in plain reveals and with sills, flat channelled arches
and keystones; tie rod ends. Second floor has smaller 6/6 sashes
in plain reveals and with sills and flat lintels. Low coped
parapet.
Ground floor at left has shop front with panelled apron and end
fluted pilasters with outer corbels'; frieze marked 'Baker and
Confectioner'; blind box; plate-glass windows rounded to upper
corners with slender pilasters and carved decoration in
spandrels; continuous overlight with lozenge glazing bars;
off-centre right entrance a part-glazed door with overlight. To
right, plate-glass shop front.
Rear retains tripartite window with 6/6 between 2/2 sashes.
INTERIOR: said to retain wattle and daub. Timber-framing now
concealed in internal walls.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the shop front to right occupies the former
carriageway giving access to rear.
