Formerly known as: Forest Lodge CARTERS HILL.
Large house in parkland with ha-ha. Mid C18, altered and
extended mid C19 when the Factor's house and dairy were built;
these now form part of the house. Altered C20.
MATERIALS: Painted stucco and render, hipped slate roof of
double span.
PLAN: Irregular plan with projecting and recessed entrance
front, projecting octagonal section to right of centre at
rear.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and cellar. 5 chimneys, all altered.
Windows on front are 2 and 3-light casements with leaded,
square lights with Gothic pointed arches under square heads,
C19 sash windows on right hand section. Mullioned and
transomed windows at rear, sash windows with glazing bars and
trefoiled neads and openings in octagonal section. Entrance
(north) front: 5 sections, on right former Factor's house and
dairy. Former house of 3 bays with central, round roof lantern
and central double door in enclosed Ionic porch with patterned
segmental fanlight. To right of this, set back, is 3-bay
section with double hipped roof. On right of this and on left
of former house are single bay gable projections with hipped
roofs.
INTERIOR: dog-leg staircase with barley sugar balusters,
wreathed handrail and closed carved string. Octagonal room on
south, off sitting room, has rococo plaster work on ceiling;
trees and garlands of fruit and flowers in high relief on
walls.
