House, now offices. Mid C16, altered and extended C17, C19 and
c1930.
MATERIALS: mostly old brick, some with diaper pattern of
vitreous headers. Some brick is in English bond, some is in
Flemish bond. Part timber frame encased in brick. Old tile
hipped roofs.
PLAN: former plan of 4 framed bays, extended on west and
south, now irregular.
EXTERIOR: part 2 storeys, part 2 storeys and attic, with
cellar. 3 chimneys, one with diagonal shafts set on square
bases, and with offset heads. One chimney bears the date 1702.
C20 diamond-leaded casements. Entrance (south) front: 3,
single bay projections with hipped roofs. Left hand projection
has entrance porch, slightly overhangs at first floor level
and has 2-light window, plank door with pointed head and brick
arch at ground floor. Together with single bay section on left
dated C20. Middle projection contains staircase and has large
window with pointed head, and brick arch. Window has transom
and inter-laced glazing bars. Third projection on right has
platband and coved and moulded eaves cornice, and 3-light
window on ground and first floor. On left return of this
projection, door of 8 fielded panels with segmental head
approached by 4 brick steps. Recessed section of 2-bays
between second and third sections has platband, with 3-light
windows on both floors.
INTERIOR: contains much C16 and C17 panelling on both floors
in older section. Conference room: exposed large chamfered
joists, principal beam with chamfers and plain stops. Part
C16, part C19 panelling. Stone fireplace with roll mouldings
partly re-modelled. Office adjoining conference room: exposed
large joists and principal beams with roll mouldings, hollow
chamfers and painted floral decoration with Tudor roses. C18
panelling and C17 chalk fireplace with roll mouldings on jambs
and head. Rooms over these ground floor rooms have C16 and C17
panelling and moulded ceiling cornices. Stair hall has C19
dog-leg staircase in the Jacobean style. To right of stair
hall is passage way lined with early C17 panelling with fluted
uprights and cornice. Roof has double butt purlins, chamfered,
large arch-braced middle truss and moulded tie-beam on gable
end. House once much larger and had west wing of which
foundations have been found, originally E-shaped in plan.
