Includes: Binfield Park WICKS GREEN.
Large country house set in parkland, now hospital. 1775 with
C19 and C20 additions.
MATERIALS: Red brick in Flemish bond, slate hipped roofs.
PLAN: Rectangular plan extended on both ends.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and 2 storeys. Sash windows with glazing
bars. Entrance (west) front: stone frieze, cornice and
blocking course. 5-bays in centre block. Second floor set back
with irregular fenestration. First floor has stone cornice and
central gable with Venetian window. Ground floor windows are
lunettes. Central, 6-panel door, with cornice and patterned,
leaded fanlight, moulded architrave. Doric prostyle porch with
triglyph frieze and mutule cornice under open pediment with
mutule cornice. Projecting wing on left of 2 storeys and
5-bays with C20 extension at end. Projecting wing on right of
5-bays but ground floor windows are transomed casements. In
angles are 3-bay, single storey extensions, left with
lunettes. East front: symmetrical 9-bays. Stone plinth,
platband, string at first floor sill level; dentilled cornice
and moulded cornice, plain parapet. Slightly projecting centre
section of 3-bays with pediment and centre window on first
floor with stone pilasters and cornice on brackets opening on
to small balcony with plain iron balustrading. Under this a
pair of glazed doors, up 3 stone steps, with 2-light fanlight
with circular head and keystone and vermiculated stone
surround. Windows in 2 and 8 bays have moulded cornices, 2-bay
single storey extension projecting from right.
INTERIOR: several Adam chimneypieces remain with swags and
marble insets. Lounge: C20 suspended ceiling under enriched
plaster ceiling. Panelled window shutters with bead ornament.
Niche with shell top and swags, on south wall. Panelled
doorcases with moulded architraves with floral decoration,
dentilled and moulded cornices. Dining room: acanthus leaf
cornice, ceilings enriched with festoons, urns, and paterae.
Pink room: dado panelling. Marble fireplace with paterae and
swags, acanthus leaf brackets and moulded cornice. Two 4-panel
cupboards with similar ornament. Open-well staircase with
scrolled iron balusters and moulded handrail.
