II
Hall house, now restaurant and public house. Early to mid C15,
altered C16, C17, C19 and C20.
MATERIALS: part timber and frame encased in brick, part brick
in English bond. Old tile cross gabled and gabled roof.
PLAN: L-plan of 3 x 3 framed bays with probable former smoke
bay in north wing, and stair turret on north front in angle.
Later extensions on north.
EXTERIOR: part 2 storeys, part 2 storeys and attic, part 3
storeys and attic. 2 chimneys with clay pots, ridge chimney
has top rebuilt but probably C16. South (entrance) front: two
single bay gables, right hand one taller, linked by 2 storey,
single bay gabled porch. C20 diamond leaded casement windows.
Left gable: 2 storeys with attic. Platbands at first and
second floor. 2-light window at each level. Right hand gable:
3 storeys with attic. Platband at second floor breaking over
3-light window with segmental brick arched head. Platband at
first floor forms pediment over 3-light window. 4-light window
at ground floor. Some C17 timber frame exposed at rear.
INTERIOR: much good quality timber frame visible. Wide joists
at ground floor some chamfered with run out stops, curved
brackets to posts. C17 newel stairs are continued from ground
floor to attic level. Large inglenook chimney with reputed
priest's hole above at first floor.
Left hand gable and porch were covered with ivy when surveyed.
C20 extension on north.
