Large country house in landscaped surrounds. C18 altered and
extended late C19. Date of 1876 on rainwater head at front of
house, probably refers to late C19 parallel range at rear.
MATERIALS: painted brick in Flemish bond, low pitched slate
roof behind parapet in front, high pitched slate hipped roof
at rear.
PLAN: double depth plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Several chimneys with stone cornices and
Doulton pots of cutwork design. Sash windows, those at rear
with glazing bars. Entrance front, north-west, has plinth,
frieze, moulded cornice and blocking course to ground floor,
heavy moulded cornice, and plain parapet with moulded coping
string at ground floor and first floor sill levels. 7-bay
windows in moulded architraves with bracketed sills. 3-bays to
left, slight set back. Small 2-bay extension to right. C20
prostyle porch to left of centre has fluted and reeded columns
without capitals but with entablature with egg-and-dart
cornice.
INTERIOR: guests sitting room carved wooden chimneypiece with
floral decoration and roses in corner panels of frieze. Dining
room: carved wooden chimneypiece with engaged fluted columns,
reeded frieze with projecting centre panel having floral
decorations. Moulded cornice enriched with ball flower
ornament.
Study has marble chimneypiece with engaged Ionic fluted
columns, frieze with paterae and floral centrepiece; urns in
corner panels. Moulded cornice enriched with egg-and-dart
ornament, breaking forward at ends of frieze.
Games room has carved wooden chimneypiece, with paterae and
flutes in frieze, moulded cornice with egg-and-dart
enrichment.
