871/0/10175 WONFORD ROAD 18-SEP-03 Matford House
GV II House; now convent. Circa 1840; altered late C19 and late C20. Stuccoed. Slate hipped roof with deep bracketed eaves. Rendered stacks with yellow clay pots.
PLAN: Double-depth plan with central entrance on south west front, two large bays on the north west garden front and service wings to the rear north east.
Italianate style.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Symmetrical 5-bay south west front; windows in eared moulded architraves, ground floor with cambered arches with keyblocks and 12-pane sashes, first floor sashes have C20 leaded panes; moulded stringcourse; central cambered arch doorway with canopy on large console brackets, panelled reveals and panelled and glazed door. 3:1:3 bay north west garden front with elaborate eaves cornice and stringcourse continued around two large 2-storey canted bays with similar fenestration to that at front; set back on left 2-bay service wing with replaced windows. Service wings extend to north east.
INTERIOR: Principal rooms with moulded ceiling cornices, chimneypieces and panelled doors; late C19 staircase with large Jacobethan newels, cast-iron balustrade and heavy moulded handrail; servants' stairs with stick balusters and column newel. Chapel on first floor formed late C20.
Matford House is one of a group of mid C19 stuccoed villas.
