71/0/10034 Headstone to John Singer Sargent (1856 23-JUL-04 -1925), Brookwood Cemetery

GV II Memorial to John Singer Sargent (1856-1925). Portland stone. An upright grave-marker, based on an Attic stele, inscribed at top 'LABORARE EST HONORARE', and at the foot 'HE GIVETH HIS BELOVED SLEEP'. HISTORY: the American painter Sargent was one of the finest artists of the late Victorian and Edwardian epochs, and is best-remembered for his society portraits in the grand manner. Sargent's fame was such that he had a large memorial in the crypt of St Paul's Cathedral, consisting of a version of his sculpture of Christ in agony. This monument, which commemoratesd his sister Emily as well, is a restrained example of late Neo-classicism and is listed for its historic interest.
