1925/0/10013 LOWER STREET 10-SEP-04 Chewton Mendip 1,2 & 3 The Cottages
II Row of three cottages, evolved from one house; two of the cottages amalgamated into one house. Circa mid C17; extended circa C18/ early C19. Stone rubble with rendered front. Clay double-Roman tile and pantile roofs with gabled ends. Stone rubble axial and gable-end stacks with brick caps. PLAN: Row of three cottages. No.2 at the centre is a C17 2-room plan house, the hall/ kitchen on the right heated from a large fireplace in a gable-end stack with a newel stairs to the side and with a service room/ parlour to the left. Later in the C18 a 1-room plan kitchen wing was built at the back, a 1-room plan separate cottage [No.1] was added to the right [SE] end and an outbuilding was built at the left [NW] end; subsequently the outbuilding was converted into another cottage [No.3] and outshuts have been added to the rear. No.3 is now part of No.2. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 6-window south west front; various late C19 and C20 2-and 3-light casements and three doorways with plank doors. Rear [north east], gable-ended wing to left of centre and outshuts with lean-to roofs. INTERIOR: No.2, its hall has plastered framed ceiling, large fireplace with chamfered stone jambs with diagonal stops and chamfered timber bressumer, newel stairs to side of fireplace and section of plank-and-muntin screen between hall and parlour; parlour has arched china cupboard with dentilled cornice and fireplace with simple wooden chimneypiece; roof has trusses with lapped and pegged collars, tenoned purlins, diagonal ridgepiece and common-rafter couples. Both Nos. 1 and 2 have C18/ early C19 joinery including 2- and 4-panel and plank doors and panelling in window seats. A largely intact row of cottages with a small C17 house at the centre with a well preserved interior.
