392/0/10191 DUKE STREET 02-FEB-05 96
GV II Former townhouse, now offices and shop. Late C18, with mid-C19 alterations and extension. Brick with render coat to front elevation, gable chimneys and a tile roof covering.
PLAN: L-shaped plan on narrow elongated plot between Duke Street and Henry Street. EXTERIOR: Duke Street frontage of 3 storeys and 3 bays, with flat roofed mid-C19 shop extension to ground floor. This has 4 full-height semi-circular arched openings to the front and encloses the original front wall at ground floor level. The original frontage has 3 windows to each of the upper floors, the later render coat obscuring the wedge lintels to the openings. Shallow moulded eaves cornice above. The rear elevation is of red brick, with painted lintels to window openings. 2 storey curved bay window to right hand side, and rear wing to left extending along the plot boundary, and enclosing a narrow rear yard. INTERIOR: Not inspected. HISTORY: The late C18 house is shown on Horwood's 1803 map of Liverpool, and its plot is shown as developed on a 1769 map of the area surrounding Steer's Dock. At this date, it is almost at the eastern extent of Liverpool's development. Listed for group value with Nos. 92-94 Duke Street(q.v.)and No.98 Duke Street (q.v.)
96 Duke Street is of special interest for the contribution it makes to the context and setting of the listed buildings on either side, with which it shares the same period of development and the same architectural style and detailing.
