GV II Chest tomb. Portland stone. Chest has reeded angle pilasters, inscription panels to each face with inset corners. Ledger slab on top. A monument to the Loddiges Family of horticulturists. Conrad Loddiges (c1739-1826) founded the famous Loddiges nursery on Mare Street in Hackney in 1771, important for introducing many plants into the country. The nursery was subsequently directed by his son, George Loddiges (1784-1846), and then his grandson Conrad Loddiges (1826-1865).
A fine mid-C19 chest tomb with historic interest as the Loddiges family tomb and that has group value with the Grade II* Church of St. John at Hackney and other listed monuments in the Churchyard.
