995/0/10110 POUND GREEN 07-APR-06 Former stable to north west of Popeswo od Farm
GV II Stable with hayloft above. Mid C18, roof re-tiled and door replaced in late C20. MATERIALS: The ground floor is of Sussex bond brickwork with some grey vitrified headers, the loft timber-framed and clad in weatherboarding. The roof is half-hipped and tiled. EXTERIOR: The east side has two casement windows, the northern one with cambered head lining and the southern one with a fixed four-pane C19 casement. Between them is an off central renewed plank door. INTERIOR: The east wall is of sandstone rubble and there are two axial beams to the ceiling and exposed floor joists. The roof structure has queenposts without collars, purlins and rafters without a ridgepiece. HISTORY: The stable is shown on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1875. Popeswood Farm also appears on the 1795 Map of Sussex by William Gardner and Thomas Green. The stable would have housed the farm cart horses with a hayloft above. SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE: A substantially intact mid C18 brick and timber-framed stable with hayloft above. It has historical interest as a reminder of pre-mechanised farming and the building is part of a farm group with Popeswood Farmhouse, listed grade II and a barn to the west of Popeswood Farmhouse.
