The Victory Memorial
II
War memorial, 1919, in sandstone. It consists of a block of squared coursed rusticated stones with a pedimented top and a rectangular trough in front. The roof of the block is of stone slates with a raised ridge. The trough has the word VICTORY inscribed along the front, and in the pediment are recorded the start of the War on August 4 1914, the signing of the Armistice on November 11 1918, and peace declared on June 28 1919. It was remodelled by local stonemason Duncan Drummond from an earlier fountain on the site at one end of the village street in Lofthouse. A further War Memorial was constructed in the village, remodelled from a drinking fountain.
SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE
This First World War Victory Memorial is of significance as a reminder of the importance of the war in the history of every community in the country, and is unusual in its commemoration of the dates of the war rather than of the men who died in the course of it.
