BARNINGHAM
K6 Telephone Kiosk
23-FEB-06
II
Telephone kiosk, standard K6 design of c.1935 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, in green painted cast iron. Square with domed top and unperforated crowns on top panels. Situated on the main street of Barningham village within sight of several listed buildings, within both a conservation area and the North Pennines AONB.
HISTORY: the first telephone in the village of Barningham was housed within the adjacent Post Office and the present K6 kiosk was installed for reasons of privacy. At the time of its installation it had the distinction of being painted green rather than the regulation red at the insistence of the then owner of Barningham Park, Sir Fredrick Millbank. Since that date, the village has resisted proposals to paint it red.
This K6 telephone kiosk stands in a good heritage location and therefore meets the criteria for addition to the list.
