SHALFORD

II Detached house. c1834 with minor later alterations.
MATERIALS: Brick faced in stucco. Slate low hipped roof with ridge tiles and stuccoed chimneystacks.
PLAN: 2 storeys and 3 bays. Rectangular 4-room plan with central stair, later rear single-storey coal-store extension.
EXTERIOR: Symmetrical front (S) elevation of 3 bays. Porch modern but retains early-mid C19 lead tented canopy with moulded cornice. Original 6-panel door has C20 coloured glazing to upper panels; rectangular fanlight with geometric pattern glazing bars. Porch to W elevation also has lead canopy. Low hipped roof with boxed eaves. 6-over-6 pane sashes; some blind openings. Most external joinery original.
INTERIOR: Open-string stair rising in single flight with landing balustrade, circular newel post, stick balusters and mahogany handrail terminating in scroll. Interior retains original joinery, including shutters and some simple chimneypieces, a hob grate to the E rear room, alongside later C19 and early C20 features.
HISTORY: The house is believed to have been constructed c1834, the plot of land on which it stands having been sold in 1833.
SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE: Of special interest as a well-preserved late Regency house that retains its internal plan and a number of original features.
