GV II BUILDING: Shop with accommodation over.
DATE: Early C18 with later C18 front and C19 and C20 alterations. MATERIALS: Red brick with slate roof and brick end stacks.
PLAN: Central staircase plan.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, 3 bays with central bay breaking forward slightly. 3-window range at both floors of 2/2 sashes with 4 pane added false lights to top of first floor windows. Gauged brick flat-arched heads with painted keystones, those at first floor linked to a plat band. C20 shop front to ground floor. There is an elaborate late C19 eaves cornice with brick corbelling supporting a low parapet. Rear has mainly unhorned sashes, 6/6 or 9/9, with 2 staircase windows to centre, the upper a tall double 6/6 sash and the lower with a round arched head.
INTERIOR: Ground floor mainly C20 but the early C18 dog-leg staircase which ascends the full height of the house also preserves (although boarded over) turned balusters. Wavy splat baluster balustrade is visible in part on the upper flights. First floor retains a mid C18 landing arch with plaster Chinese fret mouldings and a fireplace in late C18 style as well as another early C19 fireplace with cast-iron grate. There is also a panelled cupboard and panelled shutters and window seats. Second floor retains its plan form and panelled doors mostly with HL hinges. The visible part of the roof has been reported to be of machine-cut red deal and is thus likely to be late C19 or later.

47 Market Street is listed Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* It is an C18 house, later converted to commercial premises, which retains significant historic features; notably a complete early C18 staircase.
