1684/0/10002 Milestone on A30 slip road to Lewannic 05-JUN-07 k (NGR SX2668881285)

II Early or mid C19 milestone of local granite; monumental in form wth a shallow pointed head. The lettering and numbering are carved into the face of the stone and painted black, the inscription reading LAUNCESTON 5 BODMIN 17.

HISTORY: The milestone was erected by the Bodmin Turnpike trust in the early and mid C19. The original Turnpike route ran from Five Lanes, north on Newhay, via Polyphant to `Holloway Cross' (now Holyway Cross) and had milestones at 14, 15, 16 and 17 miles from Bodmin respectively.

SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE: Milestones are of importance as some of the few physical remains of national and local historic road use. The milestones on this route reflect the standardisation of roads and the introduction of turnpikes to facilitate the transport needs of the increasingly active commercial and industrial landscape of C18 Cornwall. This is one of a number of C19 carved stone milestones to mark the turnpike between Launceston and Bodmin. The milestone remains intact and in its original location. It also has group value with the other milestones on this route.
