War memorial constructed from Portland Stone, 5 m high. It comprises a square plinth, approached by two steps, with a tapering shaft above, adorned by a cross. There is an engraved cup at the centre of the cross, and foliate motif at the base of the shaft. The following inscription is on the southern face of the plinth: 'TO THE DEAR MEMORY OF/ DAVID NEWBOLD GAUSSEN/LIEUTENANT BEFORDSHIRE REGIMENT/BORN 25 JULY 1893/WOULNDED DEVILLE WOOD, BATTLE OF SOMME/DIED THE NEXT DAY 31 JULY 1916/BURIED AT DERNANCOURT/THIS CROSS IS DEDICATED/BY HIS PARENTS, BROTHERS AND SISTERS.'

On the west and east face, quotes from scripture are carved and on the north face, it reads: 'IN MEMORY ALSO/OF ALL THOSE FROM THIS PARISH/AND NEIGHBOURHOOD/WHO DIED IN THE GREAT WAR/THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVER MORE'.

SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE:
War memorials of the First World War are an important reminder of nationally and internationally significant events which had a tragic impact on local communities. The Potten End war memorial is an architecturally distinct and fitting tribute to the fallen of the First World War.
