GV II
BUILDING
First World War memorial. It takes the form of a cross with canopy, both made of wood, erected on a stone plinth, with a bronze figure of Christ crucified. Around the base of the cross are four square blocks on which are inscribed the names of twenty seven casualties of the Great War. The whole stands on a square stone slab.

HISTORY
The memorial was erected at a cost of £228 and dedicated on 10th July 1920. It was designed by Inigo Triggs. In 2004 the memorial received a grant from English Heritage for repairs following damage due to vandalism. The damaged cross and bronze figure of Christ, and the canopy, were all replaced.

SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE
War memorials have a very strong historical and cultural significance on both a local and national level. This simple and moving calvary was erected to commemorate the local men who died in the First World War.
