NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE

NZ2664SE GORDON ROAD 1833/30/10129 Byker 22-JAN-07 (North side) 1-89

GV II* Line of five terraces of houses and flats. 1972-5 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor; site architect Vernon Gracie; structural engineer, White, Young and Partners; main contractor, Stanley Miller Ltd, save for Nos. 61-89, which are 1978-9 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor; main contractor, Shepherd Construction. Pale metric modular brick on timber frame, with vertical brown cladding to Nos. 65-83, 39-57, 17-39, 3-13, with projecting timber clad porches, and contrasting red-brown band above first floor continued across all the units. Flat metal roofs supported on plywood box beam purlins. Two storeys. Metal roofs with projecting eaves, and projecting down pipes. Nos. 85-89 of three storeys, with eaves line of timber, long, narrow strip windows to second floor, deep living room windows on first floor. All windows of timber in timber surrounds, with aluminium sliding opening lights. Timber doors with glazed panel, many renewed in hardwood. Big timber down pipes incorporating bird boxes to Nos. 61-63. Brick walls and steps to Nos.81-83, with timber entrance pergola, granite kerbs to rest. Interiors not inspected. In recognition that the Byker area had an elderly age profile when it was being redeveloped in the early 1970s, the Kendal Street area was developed with a number of units built as two flats which were capable of adaptation to houses should the need for more family accommodation arise, and this is well demonstrated by the number of units here, principally at the ends or next to the ends of terraces, which were designed for this conversion.
