TL66SE MOULTON ROAD 177-1/0/21 (North side) 30-OCT-06 Range of Stables on West Side of Stabl e Yard at Heath House Stables
GV II Range of racehorse stables on the west side and facing facing onto main stable yard. 1881. For Edward Wetherby, owner, on behalf of lessee, Matthew [Mat] Dawson, racehorse trainer, in style similar to Heath House Stables, Range of Stables on North Side of Yard, (q.v.). Red brick with gault brick dressings, end-gabled slate roof.
PLAN: Short range of three loose boxes and boiler room at south end.
EXTERIOR: single storey. On the front the plinth and quoining to corners and door jambs of flush gault brick. Three stable doors.
INTERIOR: loose boxes lined with hoop-iron strapping.
HISTORY: these stables were originally the sweat rooms of Fred Archer, the most famous jockey of the C19. The three rooms were the sweat box, the towel and shower room and the cooling off area. They were later converted into stables. The copper survives in use in the lean-to boiler room on the south end. See also entry for Heath House Stables, Range of Stables on North Side of Yard (q.v.).
