THE RIDGEWAY
Granville Street Memorial, with associated low level wrought iron railings, Witton Old Jewish Cemetery

28-JAN-10

II
The Granville Street Memorial is located to the north-east part of Witton Old Jewish Cemetery, which is contiguous with the municipal Witton Cemetery. The granite obelisk, which was erected in 1876, consists of four sections. It has a low square base supporting a square plinth surmounted by a tall, two tier, shaft with a pyramidal cap. To the west face of the base of the shaft is the inscription:

THIS MONUMENT/MARKS THE PLACE WHERE/THE BODIES REMOVED FROM/THE JEWISH CEMETERY NEAR/GRANVILLE STREET/WERE RE-INTERRED IN/5636-1876

To the west face of the stone plinth is a Hebrew inscription which is an acronym for "May his/her soul be bound up in the bond of life".

HISTORY: the cemetery at Granville Street was opened in circa 1766, and was the second Jewish cemetery in Birmingham. It closed in circa 1825 due to railway development and in 1876 some of the bodies were removed to Witton Old Jewish Cemetery. The Granville Street Memorial was erected to commemorate the re-interment of these remains.

SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: The memorial is enclosed by low level wrought iron railings.
