Reasons for Designation

The Curry Rivel memorial honouring the parishioners who died in the First and Second World Wars is recommended for designation at Grade II, for the following principal reasons: * Historic Interest: A modest yet eloquent and poignant record of the impact of tragic world events on the community * Group value: It occupies a prominent position in the village and has good visual group value with the other listed buildings at 'Bell Corner'

DESCRIPTION
War memorial. Erected 1920.

MATERIALS: Built of Ham stone.
PLAN: It has a octagonal plan and it sited on a semi circular dais set back from the road.
DESCRIPTION: It consists of an octagonal plinth surmounted by a tapering square shaft topped by a fleur-de-lys cross. It stands on a four stepped octagonal base. Inscribed panels on five sides of the plinth commemorate and list the local men who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. The south (front) face of the plinth carries the inscription: 'LEST WE FORGET / TO THE HONOURED / MEMORY OF THE MEN / OF CURRY RIVEL WHO / FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 / ALSO IN THE MEMORY / OF THE FALLEN IN / THE 1939-1945 WAR'. The south east and south west sides of the plinth are inscribed with the names of the men who lost lives.
HISTORY: The great age of memorial building was in the aftermath of the First World War, and the Curry Rivel memorial was dedicated on 7 November 1920.

REASONS FOR DESIGNATION

The war memorial in Curry Rivel is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic Interest: It is a modest yet eloquent and poignant record of the impact of tragic world events on the community
* Group value: It occupies a prominent position in the village and has good visual group value with the other listed buildings at 'Bell Corner'
