ABBEY GREEN (East side)
Nos. 2 AND 2A 12/06/50 GV II*
House, now two commercial properties. Late C17 or early C18, refronted and heightened late C18. MATERIALS: Limestone rubble, refronted in Bath limestone ashlar, pantile roofs. PLAN: Originally a triple gable house with central entry, as the rear elevation still shows. EXTERIOR: Three storeys plus full height attic, the heightening and the old gable line can be seen on the side (left hand) elevation. Five windows, two paired with stone mullion at sides, single window centre, except attic which has two windows only all late C18 type (but with horns), six/six sashes, except central window on first floor which is eight/six, and the attic ones which are three/six. Ground floor has continuous timber lintel over the heads of the openings. ABBEY GREEN inscribed in sunken Roman capitals at first floor level to left. Sill band to second floor. Band and cornice below attic. Hipped roof, rubble stack with pots to each rear gable. Rear elevation has a single bay three storey C18 wing on south, and a modern single storey extension to the rest of the site. Small shop front in north wall; eight pane windows flank doorway. INTERIOR: Not inspected. HISTORY: Sarah Siddons stayed here while acting at the Orchard Street Theatre Royal(qv). This house is not shown on Gilmore's Map of 1694, but probably dates from shortly after it. SOURCES: E. Holland, `The Kingston Estate within the walled City of Bath¿(1992).
