AINSLIE'S BELVEDERE
No. 3 and attached railings (Formerly Listed as: LANSDOWN ROAD (East side) Ainslie's Belvedere Nos. 2-9(consec)) 05/08/75

House. Probably c1806. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, painted to front, rubble to sement; double pile parapeted roof, Welsh slate to front, covering not visible to rear, with two ashlar stacks with some early clay pots to right. Staircase to front. EXTERIOR: Two storeys and basement; two-window front. First floor has two six/six sashes, to left with horns, in plain reveals with stone sills, to left of staircase lower than to right. Ground floor has six/six horned sash in plain reveal with stone sill with simple balconette to right, to left three-panel door with two moulded panels, the upper with applied moulding forming diamond panel with wrought iron wreath knocker and two small glazed in top panel (cf. Nos.2, 4 & 5 Ainslie's Belvedere qv) in stone porch with reeded fronts to stone sides and timber cornice applied to flat stone hood. Cast iron footscraper. Basement has eight/eight sash in plain reveal with stone sill, plank door with overlight under crossover, sloping grating covering area from built out front of vaults. Band course over ground floor, moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet all continuous with No. 2 Ainslie's Belvedere (qv). Rear elevation has six/six horned sashes; lead hopperhead and downpipe to right. INTERIOR: Not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings with shaped heads on limestone bases. HISTORY: Dated by Ison to 1780, the Bath Chronicle reported an `Auction of the estate known as Ainslies's Belvedere, being 6 substantial dwelling houses' on 27.11.1794; the date stone on the side suggests, however, that this house and No.3 were later additions to the original row of six houses, comprising Nos. 4-9. A William Ainslie was one of the original lessees of a house in The Circus.
