LANSDOWN ROAD (West side) Beckford's Gate 11/08/72

GV II

Gateway to the north end of Beckford's Ride, at the former entrance to Beckford's Tower (qv). c1826. Possibly by HE Goodridge. Rectangular plan. Castellated style. Limestone ashlar. Approx 10m high and 5m wide, the coped battlements have a heavy roll-moulded string course over the machicolation; offset angle buttresses with similar strings over splayed bases flank a semicircular recess approx 4m high over set back similar recess and a roll-moulded arris to a plank-and-studded door with ornate strap hinges. Above the door is a triple-recessed panel with a carved Beckford Arms. An ivy-covered block to the rear approx 5m high has offset buttresses with a C20 metal fire escape above. Squared rubblestone walls approx 4m high project at right-angles with rebates to splayed semicircular arches, that to the left has a segmental-arched top to a gate with long/short railings, no gate to the right. HISTORY: The gate originally gave access to Beckford's Ride leaving his gardens above Lansdown Crescent into open land on the way up towards his tower (qv) a mile and a half away. It thus forms a literal gateway to a remarkable private domain, and is a remarkable garden structure designed in a characteristically singular idiom. SOURCES: (The Connoisseur, April 1976, 251; Jackson N: Nineteenth Century Bath - Architects and Architecture: Bath: 1991-: 89-95).
