Includes: GEORGE¿S PLACE, Nos. 1-5 (consec).
Five terrace houses, now shops, stepped downhill from No.1 to left. c1800 with early C19 and C20 alterations. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, double pitched slate roofs with moulded stacks to party walls. PLAN: Double depth plan. EXTERIOR: Three storeys. Nos. 1, 2 and 3 are 2-window range. Coped parapets and cornices (those to Nos. 2 and 3 are continuous), six/six pane sash windows, those to first floor have cornices on consoles. Moulded sills to shop windows. No.1 has c1820-1830 shop front with windows of c1887 by Browne and Gill, cornice over shop fascia, ornamental six panel door and overlight to right, half-glazed central shop door and overlight flanked segmental arched plate glass shop windows with two pane overlights. Narrow panelled pilasters with lion-head tops flank front with similar paired pilasters to right of door. Nos. 4 and 5 to right stepped forward symmetrical three window range pair with blind windows to party wall, continuous first floor sill band and cornice to shop fascias. No.2 has early C19 shop front with projecting cornice over fascia, six-panel door to far left, half-glazed shop door to inside left and three pane plate glass shop window to right all have semi-elliptical arched overlights. No.3 has 1820-1830 altered shop front with similar door to left, pilasters and overlight to No.1, half-glazed door to right has large pierced cast iron trellised overlight. C20 plate glass shop window with four panes to overlight. No.4 has similar door to left with plain overlight and C20 shop front. No. 5 has six/six pane window set into blocked shop front and door in set back range to right. INTERIORS: Not inspected but No. 3 has a pair of brass and ebony pull-handles on the shop door. HISTORY: The later windows of No. 1 designed by Brown & Gill, Architects, 1 Fountain Buildings c1887.
