GV II

House, now flats. c1790-1793 with C19 and C20 alterations. By John Palmer. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, rubble to basement, rendered parapet, rubble to rear. Concrete tile double pile mansard roof with coped gable wall with two ashlar stacks with some early clay pots to right. Staircase to front. EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement, three-window range. First floor has two C19 plate glass horned sashes in plain reveals to right, one six/nine-sash in plain reveal to left. Second floor has similar plate glass sashes to right and six/six-sash to left. Ground floor has two similar plate glass sashes in plain reveals with stone sills to right, to left six-panel door with reeded, raised and fielded and two upper panels glazed, with cast iron knocker in pedimented Doric doorcase with two pennant steps, one step to pennant paved crossover with cast iron footscraper, small four-pane window with splayed reveal and guard of two wrought iron bars to left of door. Basement has two six/six-sashes in plain reveals with stone sills, area steps with C20 treads and wrought iron handrail. Two single dormers with six/six-sashes. Band course over ground floor, sill bands to first floor and second floor windows, frieze, moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet. Rear elevation has early glazing bar sashes with wrought iron balconettes to first floor. INTERIOR: Noted as having Chinese Chippendale balustrade on second half landing of stairs. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings and gate with shaped heads on limestone bases. HISTORY: Part of incomplete St James's Square development on land leased by Fielder, King, Hewlett and Broom from Sir Peter Rivers Gay 25 March 1790; upper part of Park Street commenced to design of John Palmer and continued but not completed to design of John Pinch after 1808, street formerly terminated by All Saints' Chapel at top and intended to be continued in a NW direction as Regent Place.
