BATHWICK STREET (South side) Former Mortuary Chapel (Formerly Listed as: BATHWICK STREET Mortuary Chapel) 05/08/75

Ruined mortuary chapel. c1820 by John Pinch. Built using stone from the old church which was demolished in 1818. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar. PLAN: Three bay plan with a north-west tower. EXTERIOR: The three stage tower has off-set angle buttresses, an ogee-arched dripmould over a two light opening with four pierced quatrefoils to each light of bell openings to the third stage, a shallow pointed arch and dripmould to a two light window to the second stage and a similar arch to a former door. The nave is articulated by thin off-set recessed buttresses, a three light south-east window has intersecting tracery, a dripmould and an oval plaque to the left. No roof. INTERIOR: Not inspected, it is reputed to incorporate the chancel arch from the old church; the font is now in St Mary's. HISTORY: The architect John Pinch (1770-1827) is buried close by this building, which he designed, on its south side.
