BEAUFORD SQUARE (North side)
Nos. 17 and 18 with railings 11/08/72
GV II
Pair of terrace houses. c1730, raised and refronted late C18. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, rubble to rear, slate double roofs. EXTERIOR: Three storeys and basement, all twelve pane sashes in plain reveals. No.17 has two at second floor above paired sashes at first and ground floor, with two casements to the basement; above the doorway is a painted-in blind light. No.18 has a paired sash, one half blind, and a further sash inserted to the right, above paired sash at first and ground floors, with two twelve pane in splays to the basement; above the doorway is a blind light. Both houses have, to the right, a six panel door with three pane transom light in moulded architrave, with segmental pediment on fluted pilasters with consoles. Small moulded cornice with shallow blocking course and parapet; to the right of each, to coped part divisions, pairs of ashlar stacks. INTERIORS: Not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Basement areas are enclosed by simple railings on a stone curb, returned at the doorways. HISTORY: This development of c1727 constitutes a notable attempt to create an architecturally coherent square in a style different to that of John Wood, and forms an important episode in the growth of Bath, as well as possessing great group value with the Theatre Royal. This pair of houses retains only the doorways showing the original Strahan configuration; otherwise, all is refaced and refenestrated. SOURCES: W. Ison, The Georgian Buildings of Bath (1948-), 133.
