GV II
Freestanding garden gateway. c1750. Ashlar. Plain opening, without gate or door, with heavily vermiculated stone piers and tympanum on slight plinth and to deep plain impost band with semicircular arch and very large ashlar keystone carrying moulded open pediment with cyma-recta cornice, to plain `stops'. Simple drafted edge to arch and jambs, and detail identical to both faces of gateway. Gateway originally crossed driveway on approach to kitchen garden, but was moved to its present position when driveway was created to north of house in C19. Design heavy, and almost Vanbrughian in expression.
