GV II

Large detached Italianate villa. c1840. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, slate roof. EXTERIOR: Two storeys on third below south facing terrace. Road front, set back only slightly from boundary wall (qv), has one sash at first floor, and wide entrance front, to west, has twelve pane sashes flanking full height square porch, with that to right at first floor painted in to blind opening, and small paired light at mid-height immediately left of porch. Ground floor sash to left has cornice on brackets, and to right flat roofed extension with two and one light casements in moulded architraves. Porch has twelve pane over wide arched doorway with pair of glazed doors and overlight, return of porch has blind opening at each level, arched at lower level. East front, to left, has one blind light and two twelve pane sashes, to sills on brackets. Garden front has three twelve pane sashes above four pane each side of pair of glazed doors to three pane transom light, with broad glazed verandah canopy on three wide arches to slender cast iron supports. The Terrace runs across the full width of the house, with fine balustrade with tall oval openings. This stands on a triple arcade, flanked by blind arches, with rectangular piers with impost bands; arched windows within basement walls behind. Two stacks each end, and deep bracketed eaves. INTERIOR: Not inspected. HISTORY: The grandest of group of four villas exploiting sloping sites with extensive views to south, and showing the transition from Late Georgian to early Victorian Italianate styles of villa design.
