Detached house, now Post Office Service Centre). C.1840, restored late C20. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, slate roof. PLAN: Symmetrical gabled range, single depth plan, with single storey gabled rear wing. EXTERIOR: Three storeys and basement, front of three windows. These are all sashes, six-pane over twelve-pane to ground and first floors, these with iron balconettes, and blind light central first floor, twelve-pane to basement. Central six-panel door in portico with double pilasters with sunk panels, and entablature on consoles with deep projecting cornice. Plinth, four broad channelled pilasters, set in from corners, and taken through two floors, with interlaced mid-band, two-stage plain frieze, moulded cornice, returned to facade, high attic with upper windows, with band, frieze and cornice. Coped gables, each with deep two stage ashlar stack. Rear has twelve-pane sashes, in plain ashlar walling, with central door to landing, wing, with outer coped gable, has two-light casement with margin panes, and similar deep French casement to north, with twelve-pane sash. INTERIOR: Considerably modified. HISTORY: Part of the railway-associated development of this area; the building possesses a distinctive and transitional façade, articulated by the unusual Neoclassical device of four rusticated pilasters; the entrance porch shows the influence of the Italianate style.
