BELVEDERE (East side) Piers, gates, railings and plinths to Hedgemead Park

GV II

Piers, gates, railings and plinths at the western entrance to Hedgemead Park between Valley View House and Hartley House (qv). c1900. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar and wrought iron. EXTERIOR: Attached to the flanking houses, and serving as a gatepier to Valley View House are piers with dentil cornices and lintel friezes below bold ogee pyramidal caps with flat square pinnacles. Bull-nosed plinths support railings with turned finials. Open square railed gatepiers have scrolled tops and urn finials; double gates have scrolls to horizontal upper and central bands and scrolled central vertical panels. HISTORY: Hedgemead Park opened c1900 following landslips. SOURCES: R. Gilding, Historic Public Parks Bath (Avon Gardens Trust 1997), 35-39.
