Terrace houses, and shop. c1773-76. By John Wood the Younger. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar with Welsh slate roofs. PLAN: Terrace of six three bay houses. No.1 has additional three bays to left, entrances to left of each house, terrace stepped down from left. Double depth plan, except for additional bays to left of No.1 single depth with windows only on front elevation. EXTERIOR: Standard Wood the Younger elevations for 1770s. Three storeys, attic and basement, three windows to each house, almost all windows C20 reproduction sashes with horns. Ground floor has two windows, six/six sashes in plain surrounds, doorway to left, standard Wood 1770s type with console bracketed head and six panel door. Platband to first floor. Each house has three windows, nine/nine sashes with dropped sills (original sill level can be seen in blind openings on elevation of No.1 to Oxford Row). In moulded architraves with cornice heads and with moulded sills resting on consoles. Second floor windows are six/six sashes with moulded architraves. Modillion cornice, parapet, mansard roof being front slope of M-roof, two flat topped dormers with six/six sash to each house. Ashlar and rubble chimney stack to right of each house, with mixed pots, some old. Each basement has wrought iron railings to area, bridge to front door and two sash windows as above. No.1 has six bays as described, three left hand ones have single depth only. Elevation to Oxford Row blind with paired window frames to each floor against side of chimney stack. Bennett Street elevation has single blind window on second floor, 4th from left, downpipe with lead hopperhead between 4th and 5th bays, and two paired dormers to attic. No.2 has wrought iron window guards and sashes without horns to first and second floors. No.3 has additional small window inserted to left of doorway, and downpipe with lead hopperhead to right of elevation. Nos. 4 and 5 are standard, No.5 has downpipe with lead hopperhead to left of elevation. No. 6 has plain arched doorway without architrave and wrought iron balconettes to first floor. Saville Row elevation of three bays, of which two left hand ones are blind above first floor. Ground floor has blocked arched doorway at either end of bowed shop front of c1905 by G. Bryan Oliver. Bowed out, with dentil cornice, but altered. Commercial premises known as No.8 Saville Row. Upper floors each have plain sash in plain opening to right and two recessed panels to left, attic has one six/six sash. Stack with pots on rear wall. Rear elevation not seen. INTERIORS: Not inspected. HISTORY: Ground leased by the younger Wood from Sir Peter Rivers Gay in about c1770. Building of Bennett Street began on north side in c1773.
