GV II
House, now flats. c1775 (lease dated c1774) converted C20. Probably by Thomas Warr Atwood; developed by The Corporation of Bath and Richard Atwood. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, ashlar and rubble to rear, double pile parapeted mansard roof, Welsh Slate to front, artificial slate to rear. PLAN: Coped party wall to left with two ashlar stacks with some early clay pots, coped party wall to right has ashlar stack with early clay pots shared with No.24 Bennett Street (qv) to front slope of front roof. Staircase to rear. EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement; three window front. First floor has three plate glass horned sashes in splayed ovolo moulded architraves with friezes and cornices with lowered moulded stone sills on cut down console brackets with wrought iron balconettes. Second floor has three plate glass horned sashes in ovolo moulded architraves with stone sills. Ground floor has to left two plate glass horned sashes in splayed reveals with stone sills, to right eight panel door with six fielded and single glazed panel in cyma moulded architrave with flat surround with heavy moulded console brackets supporting moulded cornice forming hood over; pennant paved crossover with large slab to centre, flush with pavement, has cast iron footscraper. Basement has two two/two horned sashes in splayed reveals with stone sills, six pane door with two pane overlight and six pane window in ashlar infilling under crossover, limestone area steps with pennant inserts to treads, C20 handrail. Double dormer with two/two horned sashes. Band course over ground floor; modillion eaves cornice and coped parapet. Moulded lead hopperhead and lead downpipe attached to left. Rear elevation partially visible has two/two and plate glass sashes, three grouped windows, taller to centre, to first floor, wrought iron balconette to second half-landing. INTERIOR: Not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings and gate with shaped heads on limestone bases. SOURCES: W. Ison, The Georgian Buildings of Bath (1948-), 159.
